Just because you can, doesn't mean you should!

On the series I am working on right now we switched all four editing stations over to FCP 7 more than a month ago. Today I was waiting to grab a sequence from another editor's project (with the Editshare we can open each others projects, but are protected from accidentally saving over the other person's work) when I noticed she had not saved her project in almost four hours. My first reaction was "wow, even with Autosave, not saving for four hours is kind of brave." Then I turned to the other assistant and asked "Has FCP 7 crashed on anyone that you know of?" He stopped, got a strange look on his face (stranger than normal), thought about if for a minute, and than knocked three times on the wooden table and said an emphatic "no!"

Believe me, I am knocking on wood as I write this, but we have had four edit stations working five to six days a week, minimum 10-14 hour days, for what is easily five, maybe more weeks, and have not had a single crash in FCP. This from a point-o software release! Sure, the Export Marker function seems to have a long memory for deleted markers, and there are a couple other little oddities, but no crashes? None at all in a combined 1200 plus hours? We are admittedly not pushing the envelope of FCP, doing our offlines in anamorphic DV, though we do have a couple side projects working in the new ProRes Proxy format, but still...

What are the experiences of other FCP 7 users? How stable is it proving for you?

Maker of simple videos in a small hamlet

I haven't had any problems at all. Well, accept for the big one that it run on my G5. That's kind of a problem...

Glad to hear of the stability. It's great for you. Sucks for me though. Am I whining to much yet?

What is everyone else finding? Is Duane's success because he is Duane and the software has learned the lesson that when Duane's around it had better be on it's best behavior?

OS 10.5 or 10.6?
Did you do a clean install or upgrade?
I did a clean install on a clean brand new 10.6 - no problems at all.
I have 3 other machines to do - I would like to do just an upgrade on them instead of a full OS & FCP install. Thoughts?

All machines are still running Mac OS X 10.5 because the Editshare SAN we use does not currently support Snow Leopard. All machines were simply upgraded from Final Cut Studio 2 to Final Cut Studio 3.

We have discovered one on-going issue with a problem between the AJA Kona 3 capture card an the JH-3 deck; the frequent polling FCP asks from the deck is causing a failure to capture HD so I Googled the issue and found a work-around script from Apple. Unfortunately FCP 7 doesn't like the script and gives us a warning each time we start the app and turns what would normally be green render bars blue to express its dissatisfaction. AJA has resolved this issue with a driver update in the past and hopefully they will do so again. We only need the script on our capture station.
