FCP 7 Export Insanity
Hi, I exported an HD video, all the video was shot on a 5D, and it has given me some crazy errors. Between two clips, green frames started flashing when there was a 4 second crossfade. At the end of the video, instead of cutting to black, a title from the beginning of the video was there... I re-exported and instead it gave me an orange frame at the end. I have absolutely no idea why this is happening because it is not in my timeline.

Re: FCP 7 Export Insanity
Hey MaxT, you are very thin on the details so I am going to have to take a stab in the dark. A common problem with the video from the 5D is when transcoding the progressive video to ProRes a field order is assigned. In your Browser there is a column for
Field Dominance
(if you do not see it after scrolling across all active columns, right click on any column name other than Name and choose "Show Field Dominance"). Look at it in relation to your 5D clips; it should read "None". If it does not, that
may
be your problem.
As I do not know anything about your process, or if I am even close with this guess, I will just say if this is the issue there are tons of postings on the web, or you can post back here with a few more details and we will start the detective work.

Re: FCP 7 Export Insanity
I think you may be on to something here. I changed the sequence settings to "None" for field dominance. This actually may have made the problem worse BUT I realized that the youtube videos I have in the project which are 720x480 and lower field dominance where the 5D footage is 1920x1080 and upper field dominance and H.264. Also, for some reason it says the 5D footage plays at 30fps where the youtube stuff converted from .flvs plays at 29.97. Should I change the field dominance of the youtube material to upper? If so, do I do that in compressor?

Re: FCP 7 Export Insanity
If only there were a single magical solution for all field/frame issues. NTSC DV is lower field dominance whereas 1080i is upper field dominance. However, the 30p which the 5D did shoot before the March
Mark II firmware update
, is progressive, so there is no field dominance as there are no fields, just frames. So, have you done the firmware update to your camera? Were your clips shot before or after the update?
The other details I need you to post are your Sequence Settings, the Item Properties of the 5D footage you are working with, and your Export settings and how you are exporting. While you are at it, can you explain your ingest process with your clips from the 5D.

Re: FCP 7 Export Insanity
I didn't shoot it and I can't get in contact with the guy that did. I suspect it was before the update. I just got the footage from a hard drive. When I recompress frames on export and don't just do export quicktime movie, it plays fine. My sequence settings are 1920x1080, pixels:square, no field dominance, and an H.264 compressor. The same settings are on my footage - square, H.264, 30fps etc.

Re: FCP 7 Export Insanity
Sounds like you have found your solution, which is good news.
Typically with this camera editors do not cut in the h.264 codec, but rather transcode into the best version of ProRes their system supports. As well, Choosing File > Export > Quicktime Movie is not the recommended way to export a final file. In FCP 7 the File > Share functions gives you access to some standard options, and allows access to Compressor, a very powerful export engine.

Re: FCP 7 Export Insanity
Thank you for following up on the forum. It may not seem like much but this thread will be read by a couple hundred people over the next year and if what you have posted helps a few that's a very good thing, right!
The File > Share function of FCP 7 is one of my favourite new features. Not only does it have many common export options immediately available, but it is super easy to add more, or your own. The power of Compressor, yet super easy to use!
